Tips for Erasmus in Bratislava: low cost and dirty dancing
This post is also available in: Spanish French
Here we are with a lot of info on another Erasmus city: Bratislava, capital of Slovakia.
Francisco Chica García will show you all the tips you must know to spend a wonderful Erasmus year!
Dorms:
- Dormitory Družba: double and triple rooms. Small fridge, bath, toilet and “kitchen” shared with 5 or 3 people. Price for a double room 75€ per month (daily cleaning service and internet connection included).
Website: www.hotel-druzba.sk
Phone number: 02/60299261 - Mlynská Dolina: very cheap but worse buildings.
- Bernolak: double rooms, internet connection optional. Price 50€ per month. Swimming-pool and common places, laundry services and buffet.
Website: www.bernolak.sk
Renting a flat: rents are high (7 000 Skk, 215 €, for a shared room).
Where: Petržalka, Dubravka and some other quarters far from the center. It’s better if you have a local friend who help you find roomies and better offers. Individual rooms are very expensive.
Studying in Bratislava: Slovak course for free
They have special programs for foreigner students in english (Management and Medicine Faculties for example). For language degrees they have well prepared teachers who use those languages in the lessons.
Univerzita Komenského offers a good course of slovak language in different levels for foreigner students (for free).
University System is a little messy. No problems with specific programs but it takes lot of time to find lessons by yourself. They don’t have a fixed study program, it changes every semester.
Usually lessons are once a week. For every exam, you can choose different dates.
Places you can’t miss in Bratislava
- The Blue Church: Weird but impressive Art Nouveau building.
- Petržalka: Huge group of communist identic blocks. You feel like living in an beehive.
- AU PARK: It’s a shopping centre, new, modern, original and full of people. Slovak life!
Partying in Bratislava: absynth & ‘particular’ dancing (but careful with naziskin!)
Beer, Zlatý Bažan for example, is the best option, cheap and tasty.
Vodka, Slivovice, Borovička and Absinth (legal in this country) as shots are the usual liquor drinks here. Any other kind of alcohol is very expensive.
Discos & Pubs:
- Havana: Salsa pub in the old centre, full of foreigners.
- Unique: Disco in Mlynská Dolina (Wednesday night), always crowded. Just for students. Nice music and low prices.
- Dopler: Big disco, not very expensive and with very good music. Far from the center, you may need a cab.
- Trafo: Fashion disco. Expensive and select. Placed in the old town.
What you should know:
There are some skinheads around, so be careful if you go to a ‘just slovak people’ place (as 49, in Mlynská Dolina).
Slovak girls have a ‘particular’ way of dancing. Don’t misunderstand it!

My feeling: I love Bratislava – small if beautiful
As far as I can tell, I love this city. It’s small and nice, very well located (near Vienna, Prague and Budapest). Once you get used to Slovak behaviour you can really enjoy being here. And they have very good meals as ‘fried cheese’, ‘pirohy’ (filled pasties), ‘bryndzové halušky’ (Potato dumplings with sheep cheese) and ‘goulash’!
What to say, for me one of the best options for your Erasmus.

Comments
Wanted to comment on your encouraging post. I am currently(september 2009 till february 2010) student at Slovenska Tehnicka Univerzit(Slovak Technology University) in Bratislava. For Erasmus students of STU is not very good taken carred for.
1. Student dorms Bernolak are very bad, some rooms are renovated, some are old, bad floors, no sound isolation, doors cant be closed etc. Rooms have no fridgerator, no cooking hot plates. For entire floor(44 people) there is small kitchen with one sink and 2 gas boilers(but in some floors are broken. Dont expect to cook a lot. Janitors will take 1-2 weeks to repair it. Internet costs about 6€/month, you have 100mbs network. Problem: all p2p ports are blocked! Forget about downloading any mp3, video or a movie. Personel at dorms dont speak any english, german or french, only 1 person at signing in. You must allways show your student dorms card - imagine how can this scrue with your social life, none is allowed to sleep over, every visitor must be signed in. Even if you are willing to pay, you cant.
Foreigners will probably be put to 2nd floor, at B building, at least so you will have someone to speak english with.
2. STU, big university for technical subject, professors at least at Faculy of Civil Enginnering are strugling with english or german.
3. It is hard to find slovak with decent english, even in stores, post office. They refuse to speak english/german. If you know serbian, you'll be ok.
4. Also with young population, students, they dont know english or refuse to, so communication with locals is limited.
5. For alternative clubs i suggest Randal club and SubClub.
6. Public transportation is realy cheap, with student card(issued by slovak authority) fair price for 15minutes is only 0.25€. With public transport you can cross whole city in less than 30(40)minutes.To reach center and clubs, less than 15.
7. Slovak girls are beautiful. Beer is cheap(you can find it in part of Novo mesto under 1€), in city centre under 1,50€ for 0.5l.
8. Slovak normally drink czech beers: Kozel, Staropramen, they have reputation to be better&have more quality. Local cheap beers are Corgon, Kelt...
9. Electronic appliances are expencive, more than in Austria or Slovenia.
10. They use the french type of socket(electricity): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_pow... -> you will need to buy an adapter, for everything to work.
11. Aupark is really great!
I hope this will help, people interested to go to STU for Erasmus experience.

Have they ever seen Beyonce carrying a Balenciaga bag before? No? I can’t keep in mind one. Now that I’ve seen her with this Balenciaga Day Bag, the combination couldn’t be more obvious – the brand seems to exemplify her style.
